FW24 – Mk2 Turbine

The FW24 – Mk2 100 kW turbine brings a new level of reliability and economy to the medium-sized wind turbine market.

Our enhancements on the classic Windmatic turbines has resulted in an advanced turbine with:

Improved Reliability Our Mk2 turbines have evolved from a proven and rugged platform that has been working reliably in wind plants around the world for more than 30 years. Thousands of Windmatic WM17s, in service since the early 1980s, were displaced by larger turbines, while still operating reliably. Frontier has taken this robust product and re-designed the platform, giving them another 30 years of reliable operation, with improved function overall.

● Improved Design With a redesigned nacelle, 50 m tilt up tower, and increased rotor size from 17 m to 24 m, has been specifically designed and built for remote communities.

● Increased Energy Output Our taller gin-pole erected tower has increased the turbine’s hub height from 25 m to 50 m, increasing the energy yield.

● Reduced Costs Significant cost savings come from reduced construction costs and reduced maintenance costs. Increased energy output will allow for increased revenue generation.

FW24 – Mk3 Turbine

The FW24 – Mk3 100 kW turbine is the next iteration in our revolutionary 100 kW turbine design. This brand new turbine is equipped with all the technological advancements of the Mk2 turbine. The Mk3 also boasts an advanced drive train and an outboard gear box with a life expectancy of at least 30 years.

With the combination of the tilt-up tower, improved rotor, and specialized control system, we are confident the Mk3 turbine will be the most economical 100 kW turbine on the market.

Our Mk3 turbine will be ready for market in 2023.

Microgrid Control System

e+micro Controller

Frontier Power Systems’ e+micro, our advanced microgrid controller, has been deployed on small to medium micro-grids all across North America. We have had significant focus on the isolated community network in Alaska, where these systems are displacing significant amounts of diesel fuel used for electricity generation and space heating.

Microgrid controllers are used to manage all the components of a microgrid through one central system. Our e+micro system uses a series of discrete controllers for each of the components. Our e+micro is able to manage all typical components of a microgrid, including wind turbines, diesel generators, energy storage systems, and photovoltaic arrays. Our e+micro consists of:

System Master – this is a high-end programmable controller with the capacity to manage all of the devices on the system.

● SCADA – this provides the user interface for the system. The SCADA system continually imports and stores large amounts of data, which is processed and archived. The SCADA system can be used to monitor system parameters in real time or can be used to provide historical data for diagnostics or report generation.

Load Regulator

The load regulator is an essential component of our e+micro. This is a sophisticated energy sink device that operates quietly in the background until it is required to remove energy from the system – at a moment’s notice – to ensure system stability.

In an electrical grid, the energy input to the system must always equal the energy output from the system to maintain system frequency. On conventional isolated systems, energy input in the form of fuel can be increased or decreased to control the constantly fluctuating loads. In this way, frequency stability is maintained on the local grid.

On systems powered by renewable energy, like wind or solar, the energy into the system and energy out of the system can vary widely. The load regulator can stabilize the system by helping to dissipate extra energy coming into the system, preventing a system outage. Typically, the load regulator can be controlled at rates of up to 100 times per second to precisely maintain its setpoint.

BESS – Battery Energy Storage System

The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is an integral part of Frontier Power Systems’ microgrid controller. When the renewable energy sources are producing more electricity than needed, or the power demand from the community is less than required, the BESS can store some of this excess energy. When the renewable energy sources decrease, or the load on the grid increases, and the diesels need to come back online, the BESS provides an energy buffer to smooth the power fluctuation. With a BESS system as part of a microgrid, it enables the system to operate in “Diesel-Off” mode to increase fuel savings.

Electric Thermal Storage

In addition to storing electrical energy in the BESS, Frontier can also provide a thermal energy store used for residential heat. Electrical Thermal Storage (ETS) units use surplus electrical energy, available when the wind power exceeds the electrical load. The ETS system involves a network of residential space heaters which are connected to the system via a wireless network. In a system that has these ETS units, when there is more energy being produced by the wind than is needed, these space heaters warm local residents’ homes connected to the microgrid.
